Like Victorian or the King Henry eras?
I LIKED: The fact that its a thick book, 176 pages. Keeps the how to's brief in the beginning and has loads of photos throughout; 450+ color and over 550 black and white. These are on glossy paper. Book dimensions are 8.5 x 11.5 (or whatever a standard sheet of paper measures). I believe the idea is to photocopy what you need to keep the book intact. From the page titles themselves, here are some ideas of what you can expect: 18th Century Flowers, European "Old Masters" fruits, Victorian Flowers- People-Children-Flora-Holiday-Valentine-Birds-Animals Imagery, Antique French Floral Engravings, Eastern Design Elements, Japanese Kimono Designs, Victorian Oriental, Pandas & Chinese Imagery, Pagodas & Borders, Rococo Cupids by Francois Boucher, Birds Flowers Insects, Flags & Antique Cars, Antique Cigar Box Labels, 18th Cent. Belgian & 19th Cent. German Horsemen, Assorted Design Elements, Cartouches, Assorted Silhouettes, Antique Mythology Scenes, Sheet Music, Classical Greek Border & Imagery, Cupids & Decorative Scrollwork...among a few others.. So, you get the idea. I can't discount this book just because I want MORE of the SAME and a few OTHER GENRES too.. Like art deco or some other themes that may have been overlooked. You can't cover everything in a book like this unless its going to be volumes or several or ONE HUGE BOOK obviously! I think the authors did a good job of compilation for what is there. Published in 2001. It's worth it!

Easy way isn't the most masterful way but thats Okay!
128 pages, full color, 2001, hardback w/paper cover. This book is one of few that I have seen which shows how-to photos. Some are of surface prep and application of a few projects. I was disappointed that it didn't show the finished result of a couple of the projects, such as reverse-decoupage on glass. Never got to see the end result, which would have been nice in trying to decide if one should embark on such a project. There are NO PATTERNS to photocopy or cut out for use in this book. The craft company PLAID and their products are endorsed completely in this book, which is not a bad thing considering they break down and explain the various products, sealers & finishes explaining their intended purpose...which can be confusing to the beginner! This really helps. The GENERAL how-tos and instructional are in the first 23 pages of the book. The rest is devoted to specific projects which will list out needed materials etc. Your general run of usual decoupage projects are covered: tissue boxes, small chests, trash containers, small table tops, wood-metal-glass objects etc... Stenciling and crackle paint is also covered. Here are a few projects: Glass Birthday Plate, Funky Flower Table, Photograph Storage Box, Wine Label Tray, Galvanized (metal) Party Pail, Travelers Hatbox, Triptych Clock, Photo albums/Frames, Jewelry (brooch, earrings), Lampshade and more... Good for a beginner because of the how to photos and design project ideas to get you started. There's not alot of hoopla about the history of decoupage which can be boring and often unnecessary. If you are looking for some profound and intricate design ideas or projects or finished projects, this book won't have it. I have seen more masterful works in other books, but don't let that discourage you from buying this book as it will do the trick for any beginner and is a great starter book!
