Better than the 17-40 4, not as good as the 16-40 2.8
Rating: Good ++ or Excellent - This is a really nice lens, getting a bit old in its age, but its performance is still very reliable in all regards. It really performs its best hitting right around 20mm+. At 18-19mm is still a very, very good lens and falls into the overall good performer at 17mm. I bought this over the more current 17-40 f/4 for the extra stop and lower price. I bought this over the current 16-40 f/2.8 for the significant savings (purchased for $650 roughly 10/2009). I don't feel that I gave up much with this versus the 16-40 2.8 as I find that 18-20 is wide enough for me on a FF body. I like the range of reach with this lens, but realize the 40mm reach my be even better. If I felt that I would use this type of wide angle zoom more regularly, I would have probably popped for the 16-40, but unless this is going to be a primary lens for you, I would save the money and buy this lens. By the way, it is much better than the APC 10-20 crop zooms in terms of performance (50D vs. 5DII).

10/2009 1d Mark II
Excellent for its targeted purpose: Average to Good as an all-around camera (vs. 50D and 5DII): At the price these camera's can be purchased for used, combined with their excellent performance in specific shooting situations, this is a great camera. I bought this body to shoot action shots as its primary purpose. Its ability to focus fast, focus well (on moving subjects) and shoot very quickly were my primary reasons to buy. The fact that it is built like a tank will allow me to take this body on trips that I would not take my other cameras (week long canoe trips, ski trips, etc. . . ). I paid under $1,000 for this body with all the standard original accessories and a spare battery (about 40K actuations). I also own a 5dmkii and the 50D as comparison. It does some things better than either of these other cameras (action shooting mostly and durability and high speed focusing). On the otherhand, both the 5d2 and the 50D exceed this camera's performance in other areas. I knew that going into the purchase of this body. I like the fact that I have a FF body with the 5d2, a 1.6 crop with the 50D and a 1.3 crop with the 1D2. For action this is an excellent camera. If I could only own one body, I am not sure that this would be it (unless I was a sports photographer), but if it were, I could easily live with it. Don't let the pixel count get you down or too worried about image quality. Perhaps if you are a pro photographer shooting for SI or a sports poster company, you may need to get the 1d3 or the next to be released 1 Series body. For the price you can get these camera's for, they are a steel. People familiar with controls, menus, etc. . . of the other EOS cameras may not like the two handed setting changes on this body, but I have found that I got used to it extremely quickly and now actually prefer this approach. Weaknesses: this is a big camera and with a good lens, you are carrying around a lot of weight. This is not a big factor for me, but it could be for some people. You cannot be subtle with this camera and take candid shots of people without their knowing it. Does not include an on-camera flash, requires an external flash. None of these are weaknesses to me, but should be understood by others. The biggest weakness is that I believe (I don't know this as a fact), that the max. card size is only 16 GB, but it can hold two cards (1 CF and 1 SD). At its used price, it is hard to beat this camera. Perhaps the 7D will be a lower cost alternative to the 1D-NEXT, but I can't believe it will be as good in many regards where the 1 Series excel. FYI, I bought this over a 7D which my dealer had in stock and available for me (I was on the list).
