Product Information

This book critically examines the relationship between the UK and the EU, focusing upon the debate between further economic integration in the guise of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a series of alternative future scenarios for the UK within a multi-speed EU, or even outside of the EU altogether. This text is unique in several respects. Firstly, by adopting a centre-left critical analysis of the EU, secondly, by reviewing both theoretical and practical aspects of EMU, and thirdly, by expounding a series of alternative relationship structures between the UK and the EU. The text is divided into four principal sections examining the past, present and future aspects of the economic relationship between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU). It commences with a review of the position of "Britain as an awkward partner" in terms of three chapters addressing the themes of: (1) Britain and the EU: a difficult relationship, (2) Historical and contemporary costs and (3) Current EU trends and developments. The text then moves forward to initially analyse the current key economic issue in terms of the EU-UK relationship with a section devoted to "EMU: theoretical considerations" through four chapters: (1) An overview of European monetary integration, (2) EMU convergence, (3) The ECB and central bank independence and (4) Economic policy within EMU. These theoretical consideration are then supplemented by a third section which considers "EMU: practical considerations" and specifically focuses upon: (1) Fiscal federalism, (2) The European Social model, (3) Trade unions and (4) Business. Finally, the book seeks to extend its analysis beyond the current phase of EU-UK relations to discuss a series of potential future scenarios regarding "Alternative futures for the UK". These are evaluated within the final three chapters which examine: (1) Alternative relationships between Britain and the EU, (2) An independent, global Britain and (3) Alternative economic policies.

Reviews
'As Britain's link with the EU is very much a topical question, economically, socially and politically, this is a well-timed book that will contribute extensively and constructively to the debate. In laying out the main dimensions of the EU system, as well as engaging with the competing claims, the authors set out the pros and cons in a highly authoritative manner. The book ought to be read widely as a means of authoritatively informing a key debate.' John Wilson, University of Central Lancashire, UK 'This book builds upon the extensive body of work of the authors over the past decade regarding Britain's membership of the EU. It provides a detailed analysis of the past, present and future aspects of membership, together with outlining a series of bold alternatives.' Zhongmin Wu, Nottingham Trent University, UK '...Britain, the Euro and Beyond, could not be more timely...to be commended as a significant scholarly contribution in this highly topical field.' Perspectives on European Politics & Society
