Product Information

The restoration of the work San Giorgio and the dragon by Mattia Preti housed in the Co-Cathedral of Valletta, represents a significant success in the context of the collaboration between the Italian and Maltese governments in the sector of Cultural Heritage and is also a precious testimony the expertise of the technicians of the Central Institute for Restoration, who saved it from decay. In my institutional capacity, representing the Italian Government, I was able, in February 2004, to ensure that, in a short time, the restoration of this work by the great Calabrian artist would be completed in order to then continue with the other restorations. programmed by the V Italo-Maltese Protocol: the organ of the Oratory of the Co-Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista, an important and rare example of organ-building art, probably Sicilian, from the end of the 16th century; the restoration of the Cappella d'Italia, also in the Co-Cathedral, which will involve the walls decorated with Maltese stone carvings, gilded and painted, dating back to the 17th century; the high altar, in polychrome marble and the marble statues, designed by Carapecchia, one of the most gifted architects of the Roman Baroque, a pupil of Carlo Fontana. And finally, the monument to the Grand Master Gregorio Carafa, attributed to Ciro Ferri, a pupil of Pietro da Cortona, with the two canvases in the lunettes depicting Scenes from the life of Saint Catherine. Italy, also thanks to its constant activity in most of the world, in the field of conservation and restoration interventions of works of art, has reached levels of excellence such as to have been chosen by UNESCO as the reference country to coordinate actions to protect cultural heritage threatened by war, terrorist or natural disaster events. A sort of "blue helmets of culture" that operate, as recently as in Bam, Iran - following the earthquake - and even earlier in Baghdad - where the Italian government is supporting the reorganization of the Iraqi National Museum - and in Afghanistan, in order to ensure the very first interventions and the safety of the threatened heritage in a timely manner and to then coordinate its complete recovery.
