Geographical information systems are a powerful means of spatial information management and analysis. GIS facilties are widely used in facilities management, planning, environmental monitoring, the health service, retail/wholesale, the academic environment, transportation and many other areas. GISTutor 2 provides an introduction to GIS technology for anyone aproaching the subject for the first time or wanting a quick update on the changing technology. It is an interactive tutor introducing the various aspects of geographical information systems, automated mapping, spatial theory and geographical analysis. The GISTutor has been been revised and GISTutor 2 is a complete revision of the original original product, taking account of the many advances in GIS technology in the four years since the course was first launched. GISTutor 2 includes over 500 screens of information, many of them with realistic animations of GIS operations. Using GISTutor 2 users are taken on an illustrated, interactive tour of the technology. Its many features include: animated sequences illustrating key principles and concepts; advances in GIS technology such as heads-up digitising; developments in spatial databases such as object orientation; a free-text search facility for the whole GISTutor. It provides a guide to GIS in three modules, each covering different aspects of GIS: Tutor which provides an introduction to the concepts behind GIS and their implementation in commercial systems; Implementation which looks at the system issues in a GIS project, GIS choice, benchmarking, data transfer and networking; Directories which is an informative source for currently available systems, standards and information sources. GISTutor 2 is aimed at anyone who is preparing to study GIS at any level, since is provides an introduction and overview and a Quick Reference Guide. It is also suitable for senior managers involved in decisions to select and implement GIS for their organizations, for GIS professionals who need to explain GIS to employees, colleagues or clients, for anyone charged with raising awareness of GIS in an organization and for anyone running short courses in GIS. GISTutor 2 is professionally packaged with a Quick Reference Guide to remind users of the key concepts. It is written using Hypercard for the Apple Macintosh version and Toolbook for the MS Windows 3.1 version and it guides the user through a structured tutorial using point and click techniques. The Apple Macintosh version requires System 6.07 or higher and runs on any Apple Macintosh with a minimum of 2Mb of RAM or more and 5Mb of free hard disk space. The MS Windows 3.1 version of GISTutor 2 requires 386 or 486 PC or compatible (486 recommended) with a minimum of 2Mb of RAM or more and 5Mb of free hard disk space.
