Container's fourth LP for Spectrum Spools is another burst of the sort of fizzy electro-punk techno heard on his third album, as well as EPs like 2014's Adhesive. This time out, Providence-based producer Ren Schofield seems to have threaded a few twisted slivers of melody throughout the rapidly thudding beats, and there's a bit more breathing room to the arrangements. He hasn't remotely come close to making minimal techno, though, and it's still highly frenetic and exciting. The project seems just as carefully controlled and composed as it's always been, with feedback flaring out exactly when Schofield wants it to, and rhythms twisted in a way that initially only makes sense to him. Container's tracks are both immediate and subtle, quickly grabbing the listener's attention and ensuring repeated listens in order to mentally fit all the pieces together. Tracks like "Slippers" have beats which are dislodged enough to seem like they're skipping or falling over, but then other rhythms are layered and simmering feedback rises, and you realize that it's all going according to plan. "Juicer" initially sounds like a circuit-bent Nintendo cartridge set to a punchy new wave beatbox before an inexplicable, somewhat disturbing noise screeches in halfway, resembling a violently malfunctioning tape deck. "Retractor" starts out with about 30 seconds of sludgy musique concrete before a pummeling beat and prismatic squelching noises take over, giving way to an especially woozy, echo-laden break. "Chunked" is an especially disorienting finale, with rapid convulsions becoming increasingly intense until, surprisingly, it switches to a much sparser bit near the end.
