(Fake Book). The Real Book - Sixth Edition - C Edition comes with hundreds of songs and a whole lot of history. Dating back to the 1940s, jazz musicians used Fake Books for their nightly gigs. These Fake Books contained basic melodies or chords-the cliff notes of full compositions-enough for musicians to "fake" their way through a tune. Although popular, these books were illegally produced and distributed. In the 1970s, two Berklee students put together The Real Book, a more organized version of Fake Books, but it still failed to acknowledge copyright law and the composers who created these musical pieces.
