Chersonesos was a stunning city in the ancient world, a Greek colony of the 5th century, a Roman port and imperial base and a Byzantine metropolis bedecked with fine buildings and monuments. Yet, it has also been a well kept secret due to its proximity to the centre for Russias Black Sea fleet which has, until now, kept visitors and scholars away. The publication of this guide to Chersonesos pre-empts a fifty-year plan by the National Preserve of Tauric Chersonesos and the Institute of Classical Archaeology at the University of Texas, to explore and manage the site.
