AMD Direct Connect Architecture further increases connectivity, connecting the integrated memory controller and system I/O directly to the CPU. This architecture also enables simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing, which allows you to run both older and newer applications without fear of compatibility issues. The Phenom II plugs into the AM3 socket and is compatible with any motherboard that uses this AM3 socket architecture. There were tiny bits of thermal paste on the pins from a former too-much-paste foul, easily cleaned with alcohol.
