Synopsis
In all of history there is probably no other man who so dominated his times, so influenced its people and was so beloved by all as St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Deciding to renounce the world and enter religion, he chose the newly founded Cistercians, the strictest of monastic orders, bringing with him 29 other men and thus beginning the meteoric growth of that order, which 40 years later, upon St. Bernard's death, numbered 160 houses all over Europe. Stemming from his incomparable example and holy writings came innumerable vocations to the religious life and many remarkable "conversions" of prominent Churchmen to a serious practice of their duties--which changed the face of religion at that time. Abbe Theodore Ratisbonne, in this thorough yet popularly written biography, masterfully chronicles and explains in their historical setting all the extraordinary events and glorious accomplishments of St. Bernard of Clairvaux--the "Oracle of the Twelfth Century" and a Doctor of the Church., Abbot; Confessor; Doctor of the Church (1091-1153). In all history no other man so dominated his times and influenced its people. He prophesied; cast out devils; worked miracles; destroyed heresy; single-handedly healed a schism; launched a crusade; advised popes; guided councils (6); ended a pogrom; accomplished every mission given him--yet was always sickly; took no joy in the world or pride in his successes; and ever longed to return to his cell. A story to make you weep. 480 pgs; PB, Abbot; Confessor; Doctor of the Church (1091-1153). In all history no other man so dominated his times and influenced its people. - d***a (1495)- Évaluations laissées par l'acheteur.Dernier moisAchat vérifiéBadly discolored spine. Tried to return it but the seller's return form requires a photograph and Safari would not permit attachment of a photo to that form. I have attached a photo below. The spine was originally the same yellow color as the edge of the front board in the picture. It actually makes no sense for me to spend $5.80 in postage to earn a refund of the $5.65 cost. So I'm stuck with it.
